Since our September newsletter, we’ve made further improvements to help you move between TGRS quizzes and the Rules reference material that explains the answers.
Whether you’re an experienced referee, preparing for an R&A Rules exam or exploring a tricky scenario, these changes make studying on TGRS easier.
Find the Rule. Explore the detail. Understand the answer.
TGRS Rules Search & Navigator brings an extensive collection of Rules reference material together in one searchable workspace. Explore the Rules, Definitions, Clarifications and Committee Procedures alongside additional Clarifications, the Quick Rules Index and TGRS’s detailed topic and reference indexes.
The R&A and USGA provide the authoritative Rules resources and their own search facilities. TGRS builds on that foundation with tools designed for detailed research: combine up to three search phrases using AND, OR and AND NOT, choose which resources to search, see results grouped by source, or browse by Rules topic when you’re unsure of the wording.
Follow related references, revisit previous searches and export results to PDF or CSV—all within TGRS. Whether you’re investigating a difficult ruling, preparing for an R&A Rules exam or checking a Committee procedure, you have several ways to find and explore the material you need.
Discover it through Resources → Rules Search & Navigator.
Quiz hints now bring the Rules to you
Where a quiz offers a hint, you can now open the relevant reference material directly within TGRS.
Previously, an external link could take you to a page where you still needed to find the relevant passage. The new hints bring you to the specific Rule, Clarification, Definition or Committee Procedure associated with the question.
Your selected answers and position in the quiz are preserved, so you can consult the material and continue where you left off.
Try it: All non-exam study quizzes contain a Hint? button on the top left-hand corner of the question:

Click it and a window will open:

Hover over the “View Hint in the TGRS Rules Library” link until your mouse pointer changes to a hand, and click the link:

A separate window will overlay your quiz question, revealing all the related rule entities. All of this content is now being served up directly from a TGRS Database to help you navigate more accurately to the correct rule entities.
A Clearer Rules Library
We’ve also refined the presentation of the Rules of Golf Library to make detailed reference material easier to read.
Improvements include clearer information panels, more recognisable related Definitions, additional context in Clarification details and more consistent controls. We’ve also improved the presentation of relevant penalty statements.
You can access both tools from the Resources menu:
- Rules Search & Navigator — find material using words, Rule references or topic browsing.
- Rules of Golf Library — browse and filter the individual reference tables.
Help When you need it
PDF user guides are available from the Search & Navigator and Rules Library pages.
These explain how to use the tools, with illustrated guidance to help you find and explore the material you need.
Coming soon: Multiple Breaches of the Rules Quiz
When do several breaches result in one penalty, and when do separate penalties apply?
We’ve developed 100 questions exploring Rule 1.3c(4), examining how related acts and intervening events affect the outcome.
These are currently being reviewed and refined before their release. We’ll announce it here when it is ready for members to use.
More learning resources ahead
We’re also planning:
- A Blakey Rules video library, organised by Rule or procedure, with embedded scenario videos and links to relevant quizzes.
- A Learn the Rules programme, bringing together written guidance, reference material, lesson quizzes and saved progress.
We’ll share more as these projects develop.
For now, explore the updated quiz hints and reference tools—and let us know how they help you study the rules
See you on TGRS!
