Fraser Nicol is the host and founder of the Facebook group “The Golf Rules Samaritan”, an avid golfer of 50 years with a handicap of 7 and an absolute golf rules nut!
He grew up in Scotland and was born and bred in Bathgate, a West Lothian town 20 miles west of Edinburgh. He joined Bathgate Golf Club at the age of 7, a club steeped in the great heritage of the game, famed for producing some of the best golfers in Scotland.
The club has an illustrious history, producing two Ryder Cup captains (and players) in Eric Brown & Bernard Gallacher and a third Ryder Cup player in Stephen Gallacher.
Eric captained the side in 1969 (when Jack Nicklaus conceded Tony Jacklin’s putt on 18th green in an unbelievable act of sportsmanship) and 1971.
Bernard in 1991 at Kiawah Island – infamous war on the shore. In 1993 at the Belfry and then in 1995 when Europe overcame a deficit for the first time when entering the Sunday singles to win the Ryder Cup at Oak Hill in New York.
The most notable other “Bathgate Bairn” is Stephen Gallacher, who represented his country at Boys, Youths and Senior level, tours successfully as a PGA professional and represented Europe in the 2014 Ryder Cup at Gleneagles. (40th Ryder Cup match which Europe won 16 1/2 to 11 1/2).
Since 1995, Fraser has lived in the beautiful “Garden of England” in a village named Wateringbury. Sadly, his golfing days are over due to chronic back issues but he still has a passion for the game and the rules.
At the time of writing, he has passed the R&A Level III Rules exam, and works as a Tournament Controller with the PGA National Tournaments team in GB&I.
In January 2025 Fraser migrated the Facebook group to this new private member website to make it accessible to more Golfers & Rules Officials across the globe.
This site is a culmination of Fraser’s passion for the game, especially the rules. Over the past 5 years, Fraser has spent over 10,000 hours managing his Facebook group and creating his famous spreadsheet which boasts the largest rules of Golf quiz on the planet. The quiz is now being redeveloped into a dynamic tool that will be available on this website in the next couple of months.
